FAQs

Why do I need a Battery Monitoring System?

A BMS can prevent unplanned outages. Batteries are the least reliable component of a backup power system and have the highest impact on critical load failure potential. Since batteries can fail in as little as 2 days the only way to ensure full protection from a UPS is to monitor the batteries daily.

What are the advantages of Cellwatch over other systems?

Cellwatch has been specifically designed to monitor the ohmic value of all of the jars every day, ensuring backup protection 365 days a year — without degrading the battery. Cellwatch is engineered for simplicity and safety. It installs in less than half the time of competitive products, is the easiest to maintain, and can monitor different voltages and battery types with one system. Cellwatch is tested to both UL and CE standards ensuring your compliance to safety and electrical code standards. Unlike many competitor’s systems, Cellwatch is designed to avoid false alarms which make many systems almost worthless because users can’t discriminate between real issues and issues with the BMS.

What types of batteries does Cellwatch support?

Cellwatch supports 1.2-16 v batteries for UPS, Generators, Switchgear and Communications Equipment. Cellwatch supports all Nicad and lead acid battery technologies including Flooded, AGM, and Gel. Cellwatch is used around the world on almost every battery technology and with all major battery manufacturers of VRLA and Flooded batteries. Why do I need daily ohmic value measurements?

Cellwatch takes daily ohmic value measurements to provide more accurate and reliable data about the health of your batteries. Cellwatch is designed to test per the IEEE standard 1491 which defines the parameters for ohmic measurement of batteries. IEEE further clarifies how the measurement technique Cellwatch implemented is a good indication of the health of the battery. Cellwatch provides early indication of potential failures, so you can prevent downtime and truly manage your battery assets while ensuring your UPS power source is ready when needed.

Do we still need to schedule PM visits if we install a Battery Monitoring System?

Since Cellwatch monitors your batteries daily, there is no need for monthly or quarterly preventive maintenance. Cellwatch is a highly accurate measurement device which is just as accurate as the hand held devices used in the manual PM process. With Cellwatch, you’re protected 365 days a year. We do recommend that all Cellwatch users comply with IEEE recommendations and perform a visual battery inspection (and load test if needed) once per year.

How do I get a quote?

By contacting your local Cellwatch provider or NDSL at 1-919-790-7877 for referral.

Is Cellwatch sold directly to end customers?

Cellwatch is sold primarily through NDSL resellers and OEM partners.

Who installs Cellwatch?

Cellwatch is installed by NDSL trained and certified installers. Based on our reseller’s needs NDSL trains either installers who are employed by our resellers, or 3rd party contractors approved by and working for the reseller. If you need installation services for Cellwatch and do not have a reseller, please contact NDSL Technical Support (1-919-790-7877, press 1.)

How can I find a certified Cellwatch installation partner?

Certified installation partners can be found by contacting your local Cellwatch provider or NDSL at 1-919-790-7877.

How safe is Cellwatch?

Cellwatch is fiber optic based for inherent safety. With fiber optic interconnects there are no long, dangerous wiring harness and the possibility of monitor-involved battery ground faults is eliminated. And because Cellwatch is monitoring your batteries electronically, human contact with your battery plant is minimized.

How easy is it to install and to use?

Consisting of three primary components: the Intelligent Battery Monitoring System (iBMU), the Control Unit (CU) and the Data Collection Module (DCM), Cellwatch is the easiest system to install, maintain and expand. There are no long electrically conductive wiring harnesses to contend with, and each DCM is self-addressing and automatically calibrates.

What does Cellwatch being tested to UL and CE standard mean to me?

All Cellwatch products undergo 100% pre-delivery testing to make certain you are receiving the highest level of quality and reliability. Our products are also tested and certified under UL and CE requirements to assure our customers that all safety standards are met out of the box and no modifications are required. Internationally recognized laboratory listing is a requirement by some local and state fire inspectors based on fire code standards.

What is Thermal Runaway?

Thermal runaway is caused by the heat generated in VRLA cells exceeding their ability to dissipate that heat and can result in complete destruction of the battery including the risk of fire.

How does Cellwatch prevent Thermal Runaway?

Cellwatch will detect and provide alarms for the critical conditions that indicate thermal runaway is beginning to occur; conditional voltage and temperature shifts. The occurrence of special conditions will trigger Cellwatch to detect thermal runaway and can be used to remove the failing string from its power source thus stopping the progression and preventing catastrophe. Cellwatch also meets International NFPA -1 and Fire Code 608.3 standards.
